Before Choosing a Doctor Check Out the Latest Methods of Surgical Hair Restoration Procedures

Author admin    Category Hair Transplants     Tags

Unfortunately, surgical hair restoration has become a big business.  It isn’t always the medical science that it should be and not all doctors have the skills they should when it comes to keeping up with the latest techniques, research and technology.  In many cases patients are considered as ‘clients’ or ‘customers’ when the truth of the matter is that surgical hair restoration is a medical procedure and patients should be handled with the great care they deserve.

Trendy advertising and over-exaggerated hype make it all but impossible for consumers to make decisions on hair transplant surgery based on fact rather than fiction.  There are some facts that should be known prior to scheduling a procedure for the safety of the patient as well as his ultimate satisfaction with the end results.

Currently there are several different surgical procedures that are provided around the country, some of them are approved by the American Medical Association, and of course, some of them aren’t.  Surgical Hair Transplantation is the most recommended technique.  But it is not what it once was and an expert physician can provide results that are virtually undetectable even to your hair stylist!  Techniques have come a long way in recent years and it is a good idea to stay informed as to the latest procedures prior to choosing a doctor.  It is important to be assured that the physician of choice is up on the latest techniques and procedures.

The newest techniques in hair transplantation would include follicular unit transplantation, follicular unit micro grafting and follicular unit extraction.  These revolutionary techniques are a far cry from the old methods of transplanting full plugs that not only never looked natural, but most of the time the end result was quite comical.  At the moment the only viable method of hair transplantation entails taking DHT-resistant hair follicles from the sides and back of the head and transplanting them to the top of the head.  It is also possible to transplant hair between identical twins who have the identical genetic makeup, however, many doctors are reluctant to transplant between individuals because anti-rejection drugs would need to be taken for the lifetime of the hair transplant recipient.

It is typical in MPB for men to continue to grow hair around the circumference of the head while balding on the top.  This is where hair follicles are harvested to be surgically transplanted to bald spots on the top or crown of the head.  There is no donor like there would be in a major organ transplant so there is no need to worry about whether or not the transplant will ‘take’ and as mentioned above, it would not be necessary to take pharmaceuticals to avoid rejection.  Your body is not likely to reject follicles that came from your own body.

When searching for a physician to perform hair transplant surgery, don’t be afraid to ask all the questions necessary to be reassured that you have chosen a doctor with the right credentials.  It is your head, after all, and you will be spending a good deal of money so you deserve the best results possible.  Take the information they provide you and do some research.  If you are not comfortable with what they have to offer, keep searching.  Qualified, board certified hair transplant surgeons can be found.  It is only a matter of doing a little legwork.
